Barts Health NHS Trust

Barts Health NHS Trust comprises five hospitals - The Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital, Mile End Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. It is the largest acute NHS Trust in England, serving a population of 2.5m people, employing over 16,000 staff and treating more than 6,000 patients every day. Thanks to its close relationship with Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, the trust has a strong reputation for medical teaching and multi-disciplinary research.

Helping the hospitals meet - and exceed - the health needs of 2.5m east Londoners

Barts Health services cover the City of London, Barking & Dagenham, Hackney, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest.

  • This area covers a wide ethnic diversity and includes some of the most socially deprived areas in the country, both of which present healthcare challenges.
  • These communities are particularly affected by cardiovascular disease, diabetes and childhood obesity, to name but a few.
  • It also includes the business areas of the City and Canary Wharf, which may be wealthier, but whose populations also suffer from lifestyle-related conditions.
  • Air quality is poor, and levels of respiratory disease and asthma are well above national averages.
