Marathon Countdown: Alex's Story

28 Feb 2018

Alex is taking on this year’s London Marathon in memory of his Dad, Grandma and many others who have passed away from mesothelioma.

This isn’t the first time Alex has fundraised for Barts Charity – he raised £4,000 by climbing the Three Peaks in 2016 along with his family (including their dog Bella!).

Now, Alex is going one step further and taking on his own challenge: “This will be my first piece of individual fundraising I have done to support the memory of Dad.

“It's also my first marathon and I really don't like getting home from work in the freezing cold rain and darkness to go running, so please keep me motivated with some kind donations!

“Training is going well although it's tricky to find time to commit to the full plan every week. For example, cold and flu in the winter, blisters, being away with work… have all got in the way so far!”

As well as the marathon, Alex is holding a fundraising quiz and raffle on Thursday 1st March at The Railway in Clapham with prizes ranging from holiday cottages to free Nando’s! Please see the Facebook event page for more details.

“Any contributions towards my challenge will go towards funding healthcare to support those who are fighting mesothelioma, and to stop others from contracting it in the future.”

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that mainly affects the lining of the lungs but can also affect other organs. It's usually linked to asbestos exposure and affects over 2,600 people each year.

Unfortunately, it's rarely possible to cure mesothelioma at present. Our mesothelioma research fund at Barts Hospital examines patient responses to treatments and new ways of treating patients, aiming to improve patients’ quality of life and extending survival rates.

Thank you Alex for supporting Barts Charity and helping future patients with mesothelioma. We are sure that your Dad and Grandma would be very proud.
