Our management team
Our management team comprises the senior staff responsible for putting the Trustees' strategic decisions into effect and for the day-to-day running of Barts Charity.

Fiona Miller Smith
Chief Executive
Fiona joined us from Social Finance, an impact investment firm where she was COO and led the organisation’s work with charities and social enterprises who were looking to raise capital and scale their impact. Prior to this she was CEO of three high growth organisations which she developed and sold creating both economic and social value. Her early career was in investment banking and private equity.

Fiona Bickley
Chief Operating Officer
As COO Fiona supports the Chief Executive in managing the ongoing business of the Charity, and has particular responsibility for legal and governance matters, HR and communications. She was formerly a charity lawyer both in a London law firm and in-house at the British Red Cross.

Clare Chater
Director of Engagement and Community Fundraising
Clare has a background in project management, events and community fundraising having worked in the charity sector for over 15 years with roles at the MS Society, Parkinson's UK and Girlguiding. She is an Institute of Fundraising Mentor and volunteers with local community projects in South London.

Victoria King PhD
Director of Grants
Victoria is a PhD trained scientist with a varied experience in biomedical research funding and strategy development. Victoria joined Barts Charity in 2019 after seven years at The Wellcome Trust where she was Head of Science Strategy Delivery and worked on investments such as the Francis Crick Institute, the Sanger Institute and Wellcome Centres.
Prior to Wellcome, she was Head of Research at Diabetes UK and also spent a year at Central and East London NIHR Comprehensive Local Research Network where she led strategic activities to facilitate clinical trial recruitment in Central and East London NHS Trusts, including Barts Health.

Steve Harris
Chief Finance Officer
After a 15 year career in Investment Banking Steve moved to the Charity sector, where he has held a number of senior finance positions, most recently as the Director of Finance at Leonard Cheshire. As CFO Steve is responsible for all financial matters including oversight of the charity’s investments and ensuring adequate internal controls. Steve trained with PwC and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Ilia Ralphs
Director of Major Gifts
Ilia has been a major gifts fundraiser with the Charity since 2008 and has many years' experience of raising funds from trusts and foundations, individual donors and corporates. She has also worked on a number of major appeal campaigns. Before joining the Charity, Ilia worked in TV production.
