Rob runs to raise recognition for remarkable staff

Rob has been a fantastic ambassador, promoting us and raising funds in a variety of challenge events. After running the Olympic Park Half Marathon earlier this year, he is gearing up for the Royal Parks Half in October.

“The main reason I decided to fundraise for Barts Charity was that it was a way of saying thank you to everyone throughout the Barts Health NHS Trust for treating Mum during her illness,” Rob explains. “All too often, the staff don’t get the recognition they deserve so this is my way of giving something back.”

Rob’s mother (pictured with Rob) has been receiving treatment for Advanced Bowel Cancer for the last two and a half years. During this time, she has been treated at three of the Barts Health hospitals: The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s and Whipps Cross. Rob was amazed by the care that shone through from every member of staff.

“During every appointment and every chemo session, we have been dealt with so well by the staff. Everyone has been compassionate and understanding – not just towards Mum but to us as a family.”

“This includes all the staff, not just the doctors. From the medical professionals to the receptionists, to the staff in the St Barts shop, to those that visit ward 7A where Mum has her treatment.”

The Olympic Park Half was Rob's second half marathon. He finished the race in just over two and a half hours on a cold February day.

Rob says, “The weather wasn’t that great but that actually makes it ideal running conditions. I found the course to be surprisingly hilly but apart from that it was a great experience to do a half marathon all around the Olympic Park. I would definitely recommend that run to anyone who doesn’t want to run a completely flat course.”
