Fast food: Ward 3C take on the Pizza Run

17 Jun 2019

Last weekend, staff from Barts Heart Centre took on a tasty challenge to raise funds - the Pizza Run.

The team on ward 3C specialise in caring for patients before and after cardiac procedures. After the team took part in a fun run in 2017 (pictured, centre), they were bitten by the running bug and wanted to take on more challenges as a team.

Ahead of the race, Junior Charge Nurse Mark Alder said: “It helps to bring the team together and provides a united experience for members of ward staff. Even those sponsoring us feel more involved with the team so the fundraising element sometimes feels like a brilliant side benefit. It is, of course, great to feel that in doing something fun we can provide support to the charity.”

The annual Pizza Run is the only run of its kind in Europe, and rewards participants with pizza after they cross the finish line.

Six members of staff took part in the race, and Mark committed to dressing as a pizza if he raised over £500. Unfortunately for Mark, this target was hit the week before the race.

The ward has previously used Barts Charity funding to buy equipment like blood pressure monitors for their patients. Mark says, “The biggest benefit of Barts Charity funding has been in supporting the ward team to successfully, efficiently and happily perform their jobs.”

Funds raised from the Pizza Run will also be used to support staff on the ward and purchase equipment to benefit patients.

A huge thank you to Mark, Jackie, Emma, Rosie, Claire and Aroia!
