Section 1: Application Summary





You may request up to 18 months of support for an Advancing Healthcare Small Grant or up to 36 months of support for an Advancing Healthcare Large Grant.

Guidance: This date should be as realistic as possible, taking into account the amount of time that it will take Barts Charity to process your application and for you to prepare to start the work (including obtaining any relevant approvals). You may adjust this start date if your application is successful. We expect most Advancing Healthcare Small Grants to start within 6 months of the decision and Advancing Healthcare Large Grants within 12 months.  

If your application is successful, this is the organisation that will be responsible for administering the financial award.

Section 2: Project Summary


Guidance:  We may use this to describe your project through our communication channels (such as our website), and to describe your project to the public, supporters, donors and our Trustees. You should avoid unnecessary jargon, abbreviations and technical terms wherever possible. If you have to use them provide a clear explanation. Further guidance on writing a lay summary and other useful resources can be found through the INVOLVE 'Make it Clear' campaign.

Section 3a: Project Details

Provide an outline of: 

  1. the need for this project
  2. the key objectives
  3. the work plan
  4. the expected outcomes, including the number of people who are expected to benefit from the project
  5. the plans to support or develop the work beyond this potential period of charitable funding.

Your application will be read by a range of people including experts in the field as well as  individuals who may not know the context of your proposal in detail. Please write the project outline with this in mind.

1. The need for this project  


Describe the background to the proposal and how the need for intervention in this area has arisen. In this section, provide justification for the proposed work, including details of any preliminary activities carried out and around the current state of the field.  


2. Key objectives 


Clearly state what the project aims to achieve. 


3. Work plan  


Outline how you will achieve your aims/objectives. This should include the approach you will take, key activities and estimated timelines. 


4. Expected outcomes and benefits  


Outline the key outcomes that are expected to arise from this work and how this will positively impact on the care and/or experience of Barts Health patients and/or communities served by Barts Health. 


Outline the measurements you will use to evaluate the success of the project, including plans to collect baseline data if relevant.


Give details of the number of individuals who are expected to benefit from this work (within Barts Health and/or nationally) and describe this population in terms of age, demographics, etc.  


5. Maintainability 


Provide details of how this proposal might be introduced on a permanent basis or will lead to long-lasting impact. We understand that these actions might be completed by another team.  



Upload a list of the sources cited in the Project Outline above. This might include NICE clinical guidelines, Cochrane reviews, guidelines from major professional bodies or Royal Colleges, advice from expert groups, other charities or research papers. For academic research papers, include all authors, the full title of each publication, journal title, year, volume and pages. For citations to preprints, state Preprint, the repository name and the article persistent identifier (for example DOI).

Patient and public involvement and engagement
Guidance: As a local funder, effective involvement and engagement of patients and the public in the work we fund is very important to us.  

Patients and the public ideally should be involved and/or engaged in every stage of a project, from developing a proposal through to delivery, evaluation and dissemination. 

In this section, please outline your approach to the involvement and engagement of patients and public in all stages of the project, including: 
  • Who will be involved and why?
  • Why your approach to patient and public involvement is appropriate for this project? 
Costs related to involvement and engagement can be funded by this grant and should be detailed in the finance section of this application form.

  • We expect that the majority of the project’s costs would be incurred in Barts Health NHS Trust. We will consider providing funds to other collaborating organisations on a case-by-case basis.
